The South Tyrolean wine village of Tramin may have lent its name to the Gewürztraminer variety. It was already known throughout the German-speaking world as “Traminer” in the 13th century. This local grape variety was first mentioned in writing at the end of the Middle Ages and has played a central role in South Tyrolean viticulture since the 16th century.
